Observations on Eriugena’s translation of the essay Περὶ κατασκευής ἀνθρώπου by Gregory of Nyssa
From the analysis of two passages in the translation by Johannes Scotus Eriugena of the Essay on the constitution of man by Gregory of Nyssa (chapters XXI and XXIV) it is possible to identify some characteristics of Eriugena’s translation procedure. Although at times he translates mechanically, Eriugena shows acuteness in interpreting in a philosophically consistent way some corruptions of the Greek text he had available.

Daniele Iozzia è ricercatore di Storia della filosofia antica presso la Facoltà di Lettere e filosofia dell’Università degli studi di Catania. È autore, oltre che di diversi saggi sul neoplatonismo pagano e cristiano, del volume Filosofia emendata. Elementi connessi col Neoplatonismo nell’esegesi esamerale di Gregorio di Nissa, Acireale-Roma 2006, e ha curato la traduzione con commento dei trattati di Plotino Sulla provvidenza (Roma 2009).
